How Solar Works

Solar in Washington State

Environmental Benefits

Washington and Oregon have some of the best incentive programs in the country. These state incentives make solar more financially attractive here than in the majority of the southern states.

Solar Basics – Solar in Washington State

Does Solar really work in the Pacific Northwest?
Yes.

The science supports it...
While the Puget Sound may not get quite as much sun as Arizona or California, we do receive our fair share. And the photovoltaic process actually works better in cooler temperatures, which means that the sunshine we do receive is better utilized than the sunshine in hotter climates.

If the Germans can do it...
Germany produces over half of the world’s solar electricity, yet they are located further north than Seattle and receive 10% fewer annual sun hours than the Puget Sound. They have blazed the trail and shown that solar does indeed work in the northern latitudes.

Government backing also helps...
A key to the success of solar in Germany was investment in the technology by their government. Following their lead, our own government has also decided to invest in solar and help individuals and small businesses throughout the state of Washington install solar energy systems.

The sunshine is plentiful, the Germans have shown us how it can be done, and the government is ready to help with the cost. The question is not does solar work in Washington. The question is, how can it not?
