Solar Basics – How Solar Works

1 Solar PV panels on your roof convert sunlight into DC electricity.
2 The inverter converts the DC electricity into AC electricity for use in your home.
3 The energy you produce is first used in your home. Any extra energy that you produce is sent back out to the main utility power grid to be used by others.
4 The utility company will give you a credit for any extra electricity you produce, and will also provide you with power at night when you aren’t producing your own power. This arrangement is called net-metering and ensures that not a single watt, or penny, is wasted.
